Demystifying interoceptive exposure: What it is, why it works, and how to do it

Implement Interoceptive Exposure Effectively

Do your clients avoid emotions because of how uncomfortable they feel? Are they afraid of strong physical sensations like a racing heart, dizziness, nausea, or shortness of breath? Interoceptive exposure is a technique designed to help clients face these sensations in a safe, structured way so they can learn they’re not dangerous and gain more confidence in managing strong emotions.

Although it’s one of the most powerful tools for treating emotional disorders, interoceptive exposure is also the exercise clinicians most often report feeling anxious about using with clients. Concerns about it being “too hard” for clients, or even unsafe, are common. The purpose of this workshop is to empower clinicians to understand this tool and implement it in their practice.

Whether you’re brand-new to interoceptive exposure, familiar with it but hesitant to try, or simply looking to sharpen your skills, this workshop is for you. Using the latest science, we’ll clarify what interoceptive exposure is (and isn’t), why it works, and how to do it effectively. Through hands-on practice, you’ll learn how to present it in everyday language, design exercises that fit your clients’ needs, and navigate common concerns with confidence.

You’ll leave not only with a clear framework but also the practical skills and reassurance to start using this intervention more comfortably in your own practice.

Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to:

1

Understand why interoceptive exposure is helpful

in working with strong emotions
2

Describe to clients the rationale for engaging in interoceptive exposure

using clear, easy-to-understand language
3

Generate and tailor interoceptive exposure exercises

for diverse clients and presenting problems
4

Describe how to implement interoceptive exposure

in clinical practice
5

Understand how to navigate common questions or concerns

clients have about interoceptive exposure
