LGBTQ+-Affirmative Cognitive-Behavior Therapy
Adapting the UP for LGBTQ+ Mental Health
LGBTQ+ individuals face disproportionate mental health disparities due to exposure to general and identity-based stressors. This workshop teaches participants how to deliver LGBTQ+-affirmative CBT, adapted from the evidence-based Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP). Grounded in minority stress theory, LGBTQ+-affirmative CBT has shown efficacy in reducing depression, anxiety, substance use, and sexual risk behaviors.
Participants will explore how to integrate LGBTQ+-specific stress reactions into intervention strategies, with an emphasis on case conceptualization and areas of overlap/divergence from the standard UP.
Educational Objectives:
Dr. Sullivan (he/him) is a postdoctoral clinical research associate at the Yale LGBTQ+ Mental Health Initiative. With expertise in LGBTQ+ mental health, cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT), trauma-informed care, and couples therapy, Dr. Sullivan has authored 13 peer-reviewed publications and presented at 19 national and international conferences. He has trained providers in LGBTQ+-affirmative CBT and currently supervises therapists in NIH-funded clinical trials in the field.
