Adapting the UP for LGBTQ+ Mental Health

LGBTQ+ individuals face disproportionate mental health disparities due to exposure to general and identity-based stressors. This workshop teaches participants how to deliver LGBTQ+-affirmative CBT, adapted from the evidence-based Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP). Grounded in minority stress theory, LGBTQ+-affirmative CBT has shown efficacy in reducing depression, anxiety, substance use, and sexual risk behaviors.

Participants will explore how to integrate LGBTQ+-specific stress reactions into intervention strategies, with an emphasis on case conceptualization and areas of overlap/divergence from the standard UP.

Educational Objectives:

1

Describe the history and development of LGBTQ+-affirmative CBT

2

Explain the rationale behind LGBTQ+-affirmative CBT

3

Identify how LGBTQ+-related stress is targeted in LGBTQ+-affirmative CBT

4

Describe areas where LGBTQ+-affirmative CBT overlaps and diverges from the standard UP

5

Explain case conceptualization as it pertains to LGBTQ+-affirmative CB
