The evidence

In patients with comorbid emotional disorders, the UP produced reductions in symptoms equivalent to first-line, single-disorder CBT, and patients were more likely to complete treatment.

The Challenges

Sound familiar?

Every clinical organization we work with starts the same conversation. These are the problems the Unified Protocol was built to solve.

“Our patients rarely have just one problem.”

Anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, substance use, and emotion dysregulation issues often overlap. The UP targets core processes shared across emotional disorders, making it well suited to the complexity and comorbidity of real-world care.

“We need evidence-based care that can scale.”

Training clinicians in multiple diagnosis-specific protocols can be resource intensive. A single, flexible treatment framework can simplify training and support broader implementation across clinicians, populations, and settings.

“Our clinicians worry that a structured treatment will feel too rigid.”

The UP combines structure with flexibility. Its emotion-focused principles and skills provide a clear roadmap for treatment while allowing clinicians to individualize how they are applied to each patient.

“We don’t have the resources to train our clinicians in a different treatment for every diagnosis.”

Diagnosis-specific approaches can create an enormous training burden, especially when patients present with overlapping or changing concerns. The UP gives clinicians one evidence-based framework that can be applied across a broad range of emotional disorders.

“Our patients are spending too long in treatment without enough progress.”

More treatment doesn’t always translate to better outcomes. The UP provides a focused, evidence-based roadmap for change, with research showing meaningful improvement can occur even in brief treatment formats.

“Training has to fit into real clinical workloads.”

Traditional training models can require substantial time away from patient care. UPI offers flexible, asynchronous learning options designed to make high-quality UP training more accessible, with opportunities for live consultation and ongoing support.

The Unified Protocol

One protocol. Every emotional disorder.

An emotion-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy designed to fit the patient, not the diagnosis. Eight evidence-based modules target the emotional processes underlying anxiety, depressive, obsessive-compulsive, trauma- and stressor-related disorders and other emotional disorders, including the comorbidity that accompanies these diagnoses.

Emotion Regulation

Teaches effective skills for coping with intense emotions that are applicable across situations.

Symptom Reduction

Clinically significant reductions in anxiety and depression symptom severity equivalent to diagnosis-specific, first-line treatments.

Quality of Life

Meaningful reductions in functional impairment and improvements in quality of life.

Effective Across Settings

Successfully integrated into outpatient, inpatient, residential, integrated care, and intensive treatment settings.

100+

peer-reviewed research articles demonstrate the effectiveness of the Unified Protocol across populations, settings, and cultural contexts worldwide. The UP is the most widely studied transdiagnostic treatment in existence.
