Training options
Level I: Workshop attendance
Most clinicians benefit from attending Level I training in order to (1) become more familiar with the UP, and (2) determine whether they would like to pursue additional training. Level I training entails attending one of our introductory workshops, which we offer several times a year. This introductory workshop will briefly discuss the rationale for a transdiagnostic approach to treatment and review evidence from over 70 clinical trials demonstrating the effectiveness of the UP. Next, all eight UP treatment modules will be introduced, including demonstrations of how to apply the content and discussion of similarities and differences between the UP and traditional CBT. There will be demonstrations of core intervention components and attendees will be encouraged to participate as part of these illustrations.
The Unified Protocol Institute (UPI) is approved by the American Psychology Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The UPI maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Level II: Therapist training
Level II training entails completing 16 sessions of remote consultation in the administration of a full course of treatment with the UP.
Includes:
- Up to 3 providers per training group
- Attendance at the consultation group
- Access to on-demand training videos (which include the workshop and clinical demonstration videos) for 1 year
Cost: $3,750 USD
Level III: Trainer training
Building upon the Level II curriculum, this rigorous program involves delivering the UP treatment to clients over the course of 16 sessions under expert supervision. Trainees will complete a full course of treatment with the UP with a client, recording each session for review. Our expert trainers will analyze the recorded sessions and provide individualized feedback to enhance the trainee’s clinical skills in weekly hour-long consultation sessions.
Upon successfully completing Level III, participants will be qualified to supervise and train others within their organization in the UP. This comprehensive, one-on-one training equips participants with the necessary expertise to become an accomplished UP trainer and mentor for their clinical and/or research teams.

- Consultation on delivery of the UP (review of 16 treatment sessions and 16 weekly sessions of 60-minute consultation)
- Individual access to on-demand training videos (which include the workshop and clinical demonstration videos) for 1 year

Implementation support
Given the broad applicability and flexibility of the UP, the UPI frequently works with healthcare organizations of all sizes to support their goals to implement evidence-based treatment. The UPI supports organizations with widescale provider training, treatment adaptation for specific patient populations, treatment settings, or treatment formats, as well as program evaluation. We begin with a preliminary consultation to assess the specific needs of the organization and then develop a customized proposal.

Hourly consultation
The UPI offers hourly consultation on the UP. Ad hoc consultation is flexible and can be utilized for a variety of purposes.
It can be a good choice for providers who are already experienced with the UP and are seeking feedback on the application to a specific patient or diagnosis, treatment setting (e.g., group format), etc. For some organizations who are implementing the UP, it is preferable to pay hourly for consultation as needed. Consultation can also be utilized to provide clinical supervision during initial implementation or to design an appropriate research study to assess the adapted intervention’s feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness.

- Interested in deeper training or becoming qualified to train others within your institution? Level III provides an opportunity to develop greater expertise in the UP and to gain the skills to mentor others by having a UPI expert trainer listen to a recorded course of treatment and provide detailed feedback on your delivery.

I don’t have any training in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Can I still learn the UP?
While it is often helpful to have some experience with CBT, it is not a prerequisite for learning the UP! We often work with providers with minimal or no prior experience using more structured protocols or with CBT more broadly. The UPI is equipped to work with providers with all levels of experience. I work with children and/or adolescents. Can I get trained in the UP?
Absolutely! The UPI is your resource for using the UP with adult populations. Dr. Jill Ehrenreich-May at the University of Miami conducts trainings on the UP for children and adolescents. You can submit a training request here.
